Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beauty. She was usually shown as a beautiful woman, similar to the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Her husband was Vulcan, god of blacksmiths, but Venus also had a love affair with Mars, the god of war. The god Cupid, shown as a winged child, was the son of Venus.

The Romans knew of seven bright objects in the sky like the Sun, the Moon, and the five brightest planets. They named them after their most important gods. Venus, the brightest planet in the night sky, was named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty.
